First Market Appearance of the season are “Herbs That Reflect the Seasons” from the Nasu Highlands HERBS, Tochigi.
About 30 years ago, Mr. Hamazu, the owner of the garden, became interested in herbs that he happened to hear on the radio and began growing them at home. After that, he moved to Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture and opened a farm. Currently, he grows about 30 types of herbs without relying on pesticides or fertilizers, without tilling, and without weeds, leaving them to the power of nature. The herbal tea, which is a blend of herbs, flowers, dried fruits, etc., is said to represent the state of the farm in each season. Please come and experience the rich nature of the Nasu Highlands by looking at it, smelling it, and tasting it.
Enjoy the Unique Flavors of Citrus Marmalade: Shizuoka’s Pot House available on Saturday. Pot House is a fruit farmer in Higashiizu town, surrounded by the sea and mountains. The orchard is approximately the size of Tokyo Dome. In a rich natural environment with a variety of plants and a flowing stream, we grow more than a dozen types of citrus fruits without using pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides.
This weekend also brings more Autumn vegetables like squash, oyster and fariy white mushrooms, peppers, kale, rich soil potatoes and heirloom carrots have started to appear at the market. Autumn fruit like Wakayama oranges, Aomori and Nagano apples, all varieties of persimmon, grapes and lemons are available. There is something good here for every type of cook.
Tokyo Vegans are always well served at the market. Go Muffins Go has perhaps the best tasting pastries and sweets using vegan only ingredients. Chef Maiko has a great talent at peaking textures and flavors. Her muffins are fun and sweet cookies sublime.
