AOYAMA FARMERS MARKET AUGUST 10 – 11 TOKYO SUMMER FESTIVAL 2024

Welcome to the TOKYO SUMMER HOLIDAY FESTIVAL 2024.  Every week there are farmers originating from Tokyo to Yamanashi.  Each farmer specializes in growing fruit and vegetables of the highest quality in lockstep with nature.  Unlike grocery stores, farmers pick their produce just before they arrive which ensures the freshest possible tastes and textures. Testament to this quality is the frequency of famous Japanese chefs visiting weekly from Aoyama, Roppongi, Shinjuku and Shibuya areas. Chefs are trained to find the freshest and best seasonal produce and that can be found here at the Tokyo Farmers Market. This week is a chance to taste the delicious summer fruit of Yamanashi.  Visit the the information booth at the Farmers market to see what is available.  We have enjoyed watermelon, nectarines and plums recently.   Currently we love the green lemons for their juicy flavor and fresh aromatics.

This weekend Japan’s best hot pepper farmer will be bringing an extraordinary variety of peppers with electric colors and vibrant tastes to liven up your meals..   Blueberry season is coming to a close so maybe last chance for the iconic summer fruit.  Mizu nasu, eggplants, pepprs and pumpkins currently are widely available at the market.  Summer corn has also begun to appear.

Stop by the Kikusumi Tokyo Knife Shop booth and say hello 🙂  Every week we bring the best Japanese knives to the market many of which bear our original design with unique Japanese woods on the handles.   One of the reasons we have repeat customers is that we ask about you first to match our tools to your needs.  We also  have 2 special ocean salts for cooking as part of our Kiyomi 6 brand.  One is roasted sea salt harvested from the Japan Sea.  When added to food it boosts umami thanks to its mineral content and roasted taste.  An easy way to boost flavors and enjoy your meals more. We also have a sea salt blended with kombu for the eastern ocean of Japan.  It has a distinct sea flavor that goes particularly well with raw, steamed or fried vegetables.

Knife collections featuring Japanese woods are in stock.  New is Black persimmon bunka knives.  Each is beautiful and one of a kind.  For those who treasure the beauty of nature this is your knife.  Kashi is Japanese oak, Sakura is Japanese cherry tree wood and Enju – or pagoda wood – coated in FUKI URUSHI by our craftman in Echizen.  We have launched our original FURU series of Japanese wood handle knives.  We started this series to address the growing concern over sustainability of our resources.  Black Ghost series we have a Kyoto style nakiri and santoku that utilize kiso hinoki.

KIFLORA aromatherapy products are always available and connects to the KIKUSUMI brand in that the offcuts of woods are upcycled into essential oils.  Kiso hinoki has special oils that we now up-cycle into Kiflora aroma products.  Aomori Hiba and Kiso Hinoki bath salts remove stress and fatigue to heal your body.  The future is bright when we consider our impact and value every part of the resources we consume.

BLUEBERRY KAKI GORI TOKYO

Last weekend’s Blueberry kakigori Tokyo Event was a perfect foil to the summer heat.  Blueberries at peak ripeness from Mr. Kato’s farm in Kanagawa were presented in a multi flavor kaki gori dessert.  One usually finds the best kakigori Tokyo in sweet shops in Kyoto our near temple gates in Ise Japan.  This year kuro moji jelly was added to the bottom of the dish.  It tasted like tea with dessert.  The dish was thoughtfully well balanced and delicious.  Our favorite kakigori!

ICE CREAM

If you have been to the UNU FARMERS MARKET you probably found the Yuju Organic Ice Cream truck.  The truck and packaging are beautifully designed in soft pastel tones with handwritten fonts.  The ice cream is vegan utilizing oat milk, agave syrup and cashews to create a melting, creamy texture similar to dairy milk ice cream.  A wonderful choice of flavors are available ranging from classics like chocolate, strawberry and caramel almond to uniquely Japanese tastes like hojicha, matcha, kinako (roasted soy bean) and black sesame.  Recently monthly flavors have appeared which brings us to our current favorite – lemon shio koji.  The taste is elegantly expressive of summer lemon with delicate salty and koji notes.  Try it while you can!

Pizza

Pizzeria Carlino’s  will be back and we are super excited to try it again.  Every aspect of the pizza experience feels thoughtful, exciting and authentic right down to the authentic Italian beer and sodas.  Usually found in Nakameguro area, Pizzeria Carlino’s will be at the market both days this weekend.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend at the Aoyama Farmers Market in Shibuya Tokyo!
