KEYAKI JAPANESE ZELKOVA WOOD HANDLE
Keyaki / Japanese Zelkova wood has a structure that is uniformly hard, has excellent dent resistance and is prized for its durability and workability, making it ideal for crafting fine furniture and intricate joinery. Admired for its particularly beautiful fine grain which shines when coated in fuki urushi. The combination of keyaki and fuki urushi the final result is similar to the warmth, deep tones and grain of Rosewood but more sustainable. Since it is heavy and very resilient, it’s one of the most favored woods to use.
FURU FUKI URUSHI
FURU series is part of KIKUSUMI’s ongoing sustainable craft project to connect modern lifestyles with exceptionally crafted kitchen tools. Urushi is created by first harvesting tree sap which it can be used clear, darkened or colored. Colored lacquerware can be seen in Japanese restaurants as bowls, cups or chopsticks. Fuki Urushi refers to clear lacquers that can be light or dark. When applied to keyaki wood the beautiful grain shines through casting an enchanting warm hue akin to rosewood. Inner wood is keyaki wood which has been coated with multiple layers of urushi. The result adds beauty and durability to the wood handle with little impact on the environment.
